How selling your company’s data to AI works

AI companies are paying established businesses for records of how their work actually gets done. Here is what that means, why it is happening now, and what a sale looks like from your side.

Why AI buyers want operating records

Every major AI lab has already trained on the public internet. What the internet does not show is how real companies operate: how work comes in, gets scheduled, delivered, billed and closed, including the exceptions and judgment calls.

Labs now train AI by practice. They build simulated versions of real jobs and let AI work inside them. Those simulations are built from real operating records, and that is what buyers are paying for.

What “selling” actually means

Deals are licenses, not sales of ownership. You keep ownership of your data. The buyer licenses a defined set of records for an agreed term, under a contract your counsel reviews.

The steps

  • Assessment: a short call to check whether your company fits what buyers want. No files change hands.
  • Scoping: map which systems hold your records and agree the scope. You approve every system before anything is shared.
  • Exports and paperwork: your team runs the exports and you review the buyer’s contract with your counsel.
  • Payment: the buyer pays you directly.

How much time it takes

With help, it is typically a few hours of your time in total: the assessment call, approving scope, and running exports. Most of the coordination can be handled for you.
